Taiwan's Han Kuang exercises opened this week with a shift the Ministry of National Defense did not put in a press release: the eastern outlying islands, previously treated as rear-area logistics, are now scripted into the frontline defense sequence. The ministry under Minister Wellington Koo, who took the post in 2024, has spent two years building the war games around a Taiwan Strait invasion scenario. This year's iteration extends the map east, past the island's mountain spine, to terrain the PLA cannot reach without first surviving what Taiwan's east coast can throw at it.

The logic is Okinawa's, borrowed without credit. An attacker that controls only the strait-facing coast still has to run a gauntlet to finish the job, and Taipei has concluded its eastern approaches are the gauntlet worth building now. Command of the strait was always going to be contested; command of the island's back door was, until this Han Kuang cycle, an afterthought. If the eastern buildup holds past this exercise cycle, the next fact to watch is procurement: whether Taiwan's 2027 defense budget request carries a specific line for eastern coast hardening, not folded into the general strait-defense total.
