The Department of Energy has approved the reactor design for Xcimer Energy's laser fusion power plant, clearing the regulatory step that lets the Colorado startup move toward construction of a demonstration facility. Xcimer's approach fires a single giant laser pulse, split into dozens of beams, at a fuel pellet the size of a peppercorn, compressing it hard enough and fast enough to fuse hydrogen isotopes before the fuel has time to fly apart. That is the same basic idea Lawrence Livermore's National Ignition Facility used in December 2022 to get more energy out of a fusion reaction than the lasers put in, the milestone known as ignition. Xcimer's bet is that ignition's laser, built for weapons physics, was never designed to fire twice a second for years on end, so the company is building a cheaper, lower-precision laser architecture meant for repeated industrial pulses rather than one perfect shot.
DOE design approval is a paperwork gate, not a physics one: it confirms the plant's safety case and licensing basis, not that Xcimer's laser will out-fuse NIF's. The company's own roadmap targets a demonstration plant, Nautilus, later this decade, and the number that decides whether any of this matters is the gain per shot at repetition rates measured in shots per second rather than NIF's one-shot-a-day cadence.
