China's StairMed Tests Brain Implant Delivered Through a Neck Vein

StairMed, a Chinese medical-device startup, has begun testing a brain implant that goes in through a blood vessel in the neck rather than through the skull. The standard route for a brain-computer interface, the kind Synchron and Neuralink both use in different forms, means either drilling through bone to place electrodes on the brain's surface or opening the skull outright. StairMed's device is a stent-like mesh of electrodes that a catheter threads up through the jugular vein into a blood vessel sitting against the motor cortex, the strip of brain tissue that fires when you plan a movement. Once the stent expands against the vessel wall, the electrodes pick up electrical activity from the neurons next door without ever touching them directly. The procedure takes about ten minutes, closer to placing a coronary stent than to neurosurgery.

The trade is signal quality for safety. Reading through a blood vessel wall means the electrodes sit further from the neurons than a probe planted directly in tissue, which typically means a noisier signal and fewer distinguishable movement commands. Synchron's own vessel-based implant, the Stentrode, has spent years in human trials refining how much a reader can extract through that same wall. StairMed's approach is still at the early human-testing stage, with no published trial data yet on how many commands its patients can reliably generate or how the signal holds up months after implantation. The next gate is that data: a peer-reviewed readout of accuracy and durability, the same bar Synchron cleared before its device moved toward a pivotal trial.
