The ships carrying goods and the crews monitoring exercises experience the same waters differently. Taiwan's shipping assurance leaves that division of work intact.
Taiwan, whose military must respond to Chinese exercises around the island, says it is closely monitoring a series of live-fire drills. That is the concrete response reported: the exercises are being watched as they happen.
Taiwan also says shipping remains safe. Merchant crews can continue their passage; the crews assigned to monitor the exercises still have an exercise to follow.
Our flashpoint map recorded 60 Taiwan Strait moves between September 13 and October 13. That counts recorded developments, not ships. The shipping assurance adds a civilian measure of safety to that record.
If commercial passage continues, the crews monitoring live fire must keep following the exercises alongside merchant traffic.
