Trump's Remarks on Iran Striking Los Angeles Draw Criticism From Both Parties

The president's talk of Iranian strikes on American cities landed in a week when the war was already reaching allied soil, and objections came from his own side too.

President Trump's comments about Iran striking Los Angeles and San Diego have drawn criticism from both parties, The New York Times reports, while a White House official says he was quoted out of context. That is the usual defence, and it may even be accurate. It does not change what the sentence did once it left the room. A president naming American cities as targets of a country the United States is at war with is not a briefing. It is a headline, and the cities in it are home to millions of people.

The timing explains the volume. This week the Pentagon moved B-1 bombers out of RAF Fairford over what officials later described, through the Times, as a possible Iranian drone plot, and this morning's edition reported British police had arrested a seventh man over the incident. Washington has spent days showing that the war's reach extends well past the Gulf, one cautious statement at a time. Against that, a loose remark about California reads less like colour and more like an admission nobody in the building wanted on the record.

Separately, the Associated Press reports that six US soldiers were killed in the war's deadliest strike, and that most of their families did not attend a White House reception honouring Gold Star families. Families do not owe anyone an explanation for staying away.

Elsewhere, Cheung Kwok-keung's Hong Kong desk has the Mong Kok rooftop fire, where dozens were evacuated and the Observatory's fire danger warning remains in force today. Dev Chatterjee's sports desk has the Dodgers' 3-1 win over the Braves, which puts Los Angeles ahead 2-1 in the NLDS.

The point of the day is plain. A war that began as a matter of ships, bases and bombers is now being argued in terms of American cities and American families, and when members of both parties object to the same sentence, it means how the war is described has become as politically consequential as how it is fought.
