A place in the final, won by 0.16 seconds

Team Mushu of Hong Kong Disneyland reached Discovery Bay’s Gala final by 0.16 seconds. Its Community-race win over 正誠自由龍 bought one more start against the category champions. Mushu then finished second in that final, behind MBTA A, in the provisional results for Sunday’s 400-metre racing at Tai Pak Beach. [2] [3]

MBTA takes the last race

MBTA A won the Gala in 1:37.60, with Mushu at 1:45.01 and Hong Kong Healthy Dragon at 1:45.69. 妳小龍體育會 was fourth and MBTA B fifth. The community feed now contains results for all 27 races; these remain provisional, with the organiser’s results taking precedence. [1]

The MBTA name belongs to the Hong Kong & Kowloon Motor Boats & Tug Boats Association, an industry body for passenger-boat, ferry and tugboat operators. Its two crews supplied the Open and A45 winners as well as the Gala winner. [4]

Both MBTA crews followed the same sequence: second, first, first. A beat 港島東消防龍舟隊 in the last two Open rounds after losing the opening race by 0.19 seconds. B reversed its opening defeat by 正誠自由龍 in A45. Under the published scoring rules, the third round counts double in Open, Ladies and A45. The calculations put A on 34 points to the firefighters’ 30, and B on 26 to 正誠自由龍’s 22. [7] [1]

The heats did not settle the Mixed Cup

中國路橋對面海 won all three Mixed heats and qualified first with 27 points. Healthy Dragon qualified fourth with 22. In the Cup final, Healthy Dragon won in 1:42.49, 0.80 seconds ahead of The Dragon Nomad 遊龍者. The unbeaten heat leader finished third. Three wins earned the strongest qualifying record, but the Cup was decided by a new race. [1]

Seagods went from third in qualifying to fourth in the Cup; VRC Dragons moved from seventh to fifth. Team Mushu Gold was sixth, LBC Dragons seventh and Lamma Dragons eighth. LBC had reached the Cup on the average-time tie-break after finishing level with SFC Dragon on 18 qualifying points. SFC raced the Plate. [1]

The Plate supplied an even closer finish than the Community race: 尊龍 beat 嘈龍龍 by 0.12 seconds, 1:43.35 to 1:43.47. Team Mushu Black won the Bowl after qualifying 20th overall. 澎湃龍, 27th in qualifying, won the Shield. Those victories belong to different finals; comparing their clock times does not turn them into one overall finishing order. [1]

The Ladies winner brought a record of winning

妳小龍體育會 won the Ladies competition with 26 weighted points after finishing second, first and first. Its final time was 1:51.55. The club already had a title in the record: Dragon Boat Hong Kong lists it as the 2017 league’s women’s Phoenix Cup champion. [1] [6]

Love together Filipino Tados Dragon won the first Ladies round, finished sixth in the second, then recovered to second in the final. That produced 18 points, one ahead of PrimeCredit Filipino Dynamo. The result sheet records the swing; it does not explain the slow second race. Hydra Dragon finished fourth overall. Seagods Red and Lamma Dragons tied on seven points, with Seagods Red ahead on average time. [1]

Dutch Connexion’s fastest race still meant fourth

Dutch Connexion’s three Mixed heats produced fifth, third and seventh: 1:58.16, 1:55.84 and 2:00.29. Its 12 points placed it 22nd on the qualifying calculation, at the back of a six-crew tie separated by average time. It entered the Bowl final. [1]

There, Dutch Connexion finished seventh in 1:55.68. That was 0.16 seconds faster than its best qualifying time, yet it remained behind six crews in its final. A personal improvement in the clock and an improvement in placing are different achievements. [1]

The Community race produced its fastest time of the day, 1:50.66, but fourth place. Mushu won in 1:45.35, 正誠自由龍 followed in 1:45.51 and PinkPower Cancer Survivors 粉紅戰士 took third in 1:46.42. Dutch Connexion finished 4.24 seconds behind PinkPower and 5.31 behind Mushu. [1]

These are comparisons of recorded times, not measurements of fitness gains. The captain’s guide warns about autumn wind, chop and ferry wash, and crews race assigned boats. The Community category also has different crew-composition rules. The published results do not identify who paddled in each race or establish identical conditions. [7]

Dutch Connexion has a longer history than this result sheet: the Lamma 500’s archive carries its team’s thanks for the 2008 event. That establishes a racing presence then, without supplying a founding date or the nationality mix of Sunday’s crew. [8]

Four community crews, with different connections

The Community category is defined by residence: the guide requires at least three quarters of a team to live in Discovery Bay, with no gender requirement. A full boat has 20 paddlers, a drummer and a steersperson. This is a different test from Mixed racing, which requires between eight and 12 women among the paddlers. [7]

Mushu’s Disney connection has a sporting record of its own. Team Mushu’s 2017 haul was 38 awards, including 14 golds. Its Community win here led to a Gala finish ahead of the Mixed, Ladies and A45 representatives. [13] [1]

正誠自由龍 paired its narrow Community second with second overall in A45. PinkPower raced both Community and Mixed, finishing fifth in the Plate as well as third in the Community race. The International Breast Cancer Paddlers Commission lists Pink Power among Hong Kong’s teams. Dutch Connexion completed the four-crew Community field. [1] [9]

The scale of the day

Around DB’s advance listing called this the 36th edition of the Gala. The published draw contains 56 category entries and 47 distinct crew names: 32 Mixed, eight Open, six Ladies, six A45 and four Community entries. Crews appearing in several categories explain the difference. These are entry counts, not a count of individual paddlers or spectators. [5]

The school debut supplied another way to measure the day. German Business School had announced its first school dragon boat team, with 30 students preparing with volunteer coaches from Say Yes Dragon. Its Mixed heat places were sixth, seventh and third, followed by sixth in the Bowl. Its recorded Mixed times fell on every outing, from 2:02.58 to 1:53.79, an 8.79-second difference. It also finished seventh overall in Open. [10] [1]

The field included long-running clubs too. Seagods dates its foundation to 1999. Lamma Dragons traces its beginnings to women learning from Yung Shue Wan’s fishermen in the mid-1980s. The programme brought those longstanding clubs together with school newcomers, workplace crews and the four Community entries. [11] [12]
